Rum is not a day trip, though most people treat it as one. They arrive at eleven, bounce around in a jeep, buy a tea, and leave before the rock turns red. Give it two days instead. Arrive after lunch, spend the afternoon in the canyons, sleep out under a sky with no light pollution for eighty kilometres, and be on a camel before the sun clears the eastern ridge. The desert does its best work at the ends of the day. Note the extremes: 40C in July shade, near freezing at 4am in January.

Start here on day one after lunch. Khazali's Thamudic carvings sit in shade when the open sand is unbearable.

The whole point of staying. Camp beds are basic and the toilets are shared; the sky more than settles it.

Out of the sleeping bag at five. Two and a half hours at walking pace while the sandstone goes orange.

Only if day two still has legs. Nine hours, exposed scrambling, and a rock bridge you cross on your hands.
