Mats go down on a wooden deck at Sweimeh, thirty metres back from the water, at 430 metres below sea level. The air here is denser than anywhere else on the planet, which sounds like a wellness claim but is just barometry: most people notice their breathing settles faster than it does at home. Nadia leads a slow hatha sequence, ninety minutes, timed so the last twenty are done with the sun going down behind the Judean hills and the salt flats turning pink. Practical things. This is yoga, not a float session. The sea is right there and you cannot get in during class, and there is no shower on the deck, so plan to rinse at your hotel. In July and August it is still 38C at seven in the evening and we shorten the standing sequence rather than pretend otherwise. In March and April, dusk brings flies off the water for about ten minutes; bring a light long-sleeve for that. Beginners are welcome. We have taught people who had never held a downward dog and they managed fine.

My shoulders had been locked up for months from a desk job and the therapist found it in about ninety seconds without me saying a word.

Really pleased you got up there, Marwan. Not everyone makes the last 200 metres.
We run wellness at 430 metres below sea level, which is a strange address for anything. The air is heavy with oxygen and bromide, the water holds you up whether you want it to or not, and the black mud on our stretch of shore is the same stuff that got exported to Egypt two thousand years ago. There are four of us: two therapists trained in Amman, a yoga teacher from Sweimeh, and Odeh, who has watched this shoreline retreat about thirty metres since he started guiding here. We don't promise transformation. We promise mud dug the same week, clean freshwater showers, cold drinking water, and someone who will tell you plainly when it is too hot to be outside.

Two hours of yoga on a wooden platform above the wadi with nothing but wind and one distant goat bell. I don't usually go in for this and I've thought about it every week since.

Salt scrub, hot spring, then two hours of doing absolutely nothing under a fig tree. Best money I spent in Jordan.
