Two days, one night, eight people, in a stone guesthouse in Sweimeh village rather than a resort. Arrive at three, drink tea, then a slow yoga class on the deck as the sun goes. Dinner is whatever Um Hussein has cooked, usually maqluba or freekeh with yoghurt, eaten at one table. Early night, because day two starts at half five: float before the heat, mud, freshwater shower, forty-five minutes in the salt room, a magnesium foot soak and breakfast. You leave around eleven. What this is not is a spa hotel. The rooms are small and plain, two beds each, with walls thin enough that you will hear your neighbour and air conditioning that rattles. Two shared bathrooms between eight guests. Wifi works in the courtyard and nowhere else. We do not serve alcohol and the nearest shop that does is forty minutes away in Amman, so bring it if you want it. This is a working village 430 metres below sea level, which means the call to prayer at dawn and a rooster with poor timing. Anyone who wants a resort should book a resort. Anyone who wants the salt and an early night tends to come back.

The hot springs at Ma'in are genuinely hot - 45 degrees under the waterfall. Standing under falling boiling water with the canyon walls above is a peculiar and excellent way to spend a morning.

We run wellness at 430 metres below sea level, which is a strange address for anything. The air is heavy with oxygen and bromide, the water holds you up whether you want it to or not, and the black mud on our stretch of shore is the same stuff that got exported to Egypt two thousand years ago. There are four of us: two therapists trained in Amman, a yoga teacher from Sweimeh, and Odeh, who has watched this shoreline retreat about thirty metres since he started guiding here. We don't promise transformation. We promise mud dug the same week, clean freshwater showers, cold drinking water, and someone who will tell you plainly when it is too hot to be outside.

Worth doing, particularly at the end of a hiking week. Getting there requires a taxi and that cost isn't mentioned in the listing.

Thank you Tariq. The 5am starts are a hard sell but they're the only way to get the light and the quiet - glad you came round to it.

Salt scrub, hot spring, then two hours of doing absolutely nothing under a fig tree. Best money I spent in Jordan.

The float and the mud were as good as promised. The private retreat framing was optimistic - it's a hotel spa selling day passes and it feels like one.

This made our morning, Salma. Come back in spring, the wadi looks like a different place entirely.

They ask about injuries properly beforehand and actually adapt to them. With a rebuilt knee, that's the difference between useful and pointless.

Enjoyable morning. The tea and fruit afterwards was a nice touch, though the space felt crowded with twelve of us.
